Drug Alternatives

When a patient has an Prescription Benefit Plan, the system checks the selected drug against the formulary database on the patient’s insurance plan and based on that comparison, it displays a list of alternative drugs. This screen displays regardless of how the drug is selected (via preferences or search).

The Drug Alternatives list sorts from most to least preferred.  For each drug listed Co-pay information is included and whether the drug is brand or generic, over-the-counter or prescription.

Alternative drugs appear listed in this order:

Preferred-Level 1, On Formulary, and Unknown. Selecting a non-preferred drug does not prevent the user from issuing a prescription but it may affect reimbursement.
